Leave Asbestos Alone and Stay Safe!

J. Brent Kynoch, Managing Director of the Environmental Information Association and President of Kynoch Environmental Management, was invited to present a seminar at the Asbestos Disease Awarenenss Organization (ADAO) Conference on April 2, 2011.

His message was “Leave Asbestos Alone”. The most important thing to remember about asbestos in the home or workplace is to LEAVE IT ALONE! Asbestos only becomes hazardous when it becomes airborne and can be ingested into the lungs. For this reason, disturbance of materials suspected of containing asbestos should be avoided at all times. If asbestos-containing materials must be disturbed as a part of a project or renovation effort, the work should be performed only by qualified, licensed professionals. For those in the U.S. it is important to note that asbestos HAS NOT been completely banned, so it is possible that even new construction may have asbestos-containing materials. Floor tiles, linoleum floors, mastics, joint compound and gaskets may still LEGALLY contain asbestos, so care should be taken to minimize disturbance of these products even if recently installed. LEAVE ASBESTOS ALONE AND STAY SAFE!!
